Improving landfill gas collection through technology and apps

Landfill gas collection is an important part of environmental protection, although few people think about it. Methane is produced in landfills during anaerobic decomposition, which occurs in landfills. This methane historically was just released, but this leads to three major problems.

First, It is dangerous to the safety of those that live nearby. If methane builds up, it can lead to an explosion hazard.

Second, the gas smells terrible, which could possibly be worse than an explosion if you live nearby.

Finally, methane is a global warming gas – which needs to be converted to electricity or burned to responsibly take care of it.  In fact, methane is 20 times as potent as a global warming gas as C02.

Landfill gas recovery and environmental software

Our customer uses flares to burn off their methane, safely disposing of it. While it is better to create electricity from the landfill gas, it is not always economically feasible. These flares gather the data of how much methane is converted to carbon dioxide, which can actually receive payments for in Australia’s Carbon Farming System.

Our customer asked us to build a MySQL database to store all of this information, as well as a login system for their clients to access the information. Currently, their IT department must gather the data to share with individual landfill gas projects. However, with the deployment of our new environmental software, their customers can login and see their data anytime that they would like. This saves their company money and time, two valuable commodities.

How do apps play a role in landfill gas collection

The data is stored in a cloud, but a web app actually accesses the landfill gas collection data. This is important, as it allows the customer to look at live data, or the most recent data available. The app also allows filtering of data, enabling date range searches and other filters.

Landfill gas emissions reporting improved through technology

The landfill gas emissions play an increasing role in the complex world of carbon accounting. Since converting methane to carbon dioxide has a value in Australia’s carbon tax, companies can sell these credits to large emitters of emissions. Landfill gas collection has an added incentive, and properly accounting and verifying that landfill methane is incredibly important. Our environmental software delivered this value to companies struggling to adjust to this new policy.
